Native Origins of Shawnee County
September 30@1:00pm

Previous to the founding of Topeka and Shawnee County, and shortly after, 6 Native American tribes were party to treaties and were removed to what is now Oklahoma. Did you know that what is now the Doran Rock Garden in Gage Park was part of the Potawatomi Reservation even after the founding of Topeka? That the Shawnee Indian reservation encompassed most of Topeka south of the river? Learn about all of that plus the Wyandotte Indian who did not sign over original Topeka until 5 years after the town had been founded, as well as where all of these tribes are today, and Native Americans who live in Topeka and Shawnee County today.
This event is free to the public, however we ask that you register online for a ‘ticket’ to ensure we have enough seating set up. Thank you.
