Son Venezuela: presented by On Stage Live – Topeka

June 4 @ 6:00pm

Son Venezuela has been a Latin music ambassador in Kansas, America’s heartland, for over 26 years. Since 1994 the Lawrence based band has been continuously bringing Latin culture through music to clubs, festivals, concert halls, and private events in Kansas, all over the Midwest and beyond.

The Band.
The Pitch Weekly called Son Venezuela “The premier Latin grove ensemble in the area” and their readers agree. Son Venezuela has been voted best Latin/World music act six times. During our tenure we have been one of the biggest drawing bands on any genre in Lawrence and in Kansas City during several timespans. Our popularity expands through the Midwest having performed in Omaha, Lincoln, St. Louis, Stillwater OK, Topeka, Wichita, Manhattan, Pittsburg, Salina, and many other towns.
We have released two albums. A self-titled Son Venezuela 1994 and Don’t stop me now 2006.

Members
Throughout the 26 years that Son Venezuela has flourished, the band has undergone very few changes in our lineup. We’ve attracted eclectic talent from all walks of life. We have two Kansas Music hall of fame inductees in our roster. Our original bass player and multi-platinum former member of the Peter Frampton band Stanley Sheldon, and Fernando Reynoso former conga player of pioneer Kansas Latin band Caribe. Among the 9 band members there are over 100 years of combined tenure.

The Music
A news article mentioned that our show are like a “Caribbean salt water slash breaking in the middle of the USA.” We calculate that the wave has broken over 1500 times in all sorts of venues like Jazz festivals, the Reggae and World Music Festival, The Spirit Festival, Hispanic Festivals-Fiestas, Clubs, corporate events, weddings, graduations, birthday parties, retirement parties, Grand openings, even divorce parties. In all of these performances we have stayed true to what we do. We play Caribbean music: Salsa from Puerto Rico, Merengue from the Dominican Republic, Cumbia from Colombia, Tamborera from Venezuela, Afro-Cuban Rhythms, Murga from Panama, Calypso from the Antilles and more. All dance oriented music that make our public dance and enjoy together no matter where they come from. We’ve been transforming bars like the Jazzhaus, The Granada, the Bottleneck, Lucia, the Westport Beach club, The Voodoo Lounge, McCoys Public House, the Hurricane into world-class Latin dance parties.

The public have supported this project but we know that the music has brought and kept Son Venezuela alive and relevant for these 26 years. During this time we have been a part of the latino, the dancing, and the music community in the Midwest. In 2021 Son Venezuela was nominated for induction to the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.
